Which Lion's Mane Brand Is Most Effective? A 2026 UK Comparison by Extract, Testing and Price
No lion's mane supplement has been proven more effective than another in head-to-head human trials, so the honest way to choose is on things you can check: whether it's made from fruiting body, how the extract is described, whether heavy metals have been tested by a named lab, and the price per day. Be sceptical of any brand promising better memory or focus, because UK law doesn't allow that claim for lion's mane.
This guide gives you a five-point checklist and shows how NovusDNA's own product measures up. For background on what focus and memory mean in practice, see what cognitive performance really means for adults.
What does the evidence say lion's mane does?
Less than marketing suggests. A 2025 systematic review in Frontiers in Nutrition concluded there's still a lack of substantial evidence for lion's mane as a supplement in humans, with research limited by small samples, short durations and differences between studies.
The trials that exist used different products and doses, from 1.8 g a day in healthy young adults to about 3 g a day in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. For how it compares with other brain supplements, see ginkgo, bacopa and lion's mane compared. Because products vary so much, checking what's in the capsule matters more than the brand name.
NovusDNA is a UK supplement brand making clearly labelled, science-led supplements tested by Campden BRI, a UKAS-accredited UK laboratory. We'll use NovusDNA Lion's Mane as a worked example against the checklist, including the point where we don't yet meet it.
The five-point comparison checklist
1. Fruiting body or mycelium on grain?
Many products sold as "mushroom" are actually mycelium grown on grain. A 2026 paper in the Journal of AOAC International explains that this process can't remove the grain substrate, so the finished product is often mostly grain.
The two parts also contain different compounds: a 2018 review in Behavioural Neurology noted that hericenones are typically found in the fruiting body and erinacines in the mycelium. For more, see our guide to fruiting body vs mycelium. There's a regulatory angle too: in 2019 the EU classed dehydrated lion's mane mycelium powder as a novel food, and EU novel food decisions made before 2021 still apply in Great Britain.
2. Is the extract clearly described?
An extract ratio such as 20:1 tells you how much raw mushroom went into each unit of extract, but there's no single standard for how extracts are made. A 2022 best-practice guideline in Frontiers in Pharmacology warns that two extracts from the same plant species can differ significantly in composition. Look for the ratio, the mushroom part and the amount of extract per capsule.
3. How is beta-glucan measured?
Some labels give a "polysaccharides" percentage, which can mislead, because starch from grain is also a polysaccharide. The 2026 AOAC paper says grain starch can distort beta-glucan analysis. If a brand quotes beta-glucans, ask which test method it used.
4. Are heavy metals tested by a named lab?
Mushrooms can absorb metals from what they're grown on. In Great Britain, food supplements must stay within legal maximum levels of 3.0 mg/kg for lead, 1.0 mg/kg for cadmium and 0.1 mg/kg for mercury. A good brand publishes results from a named laboratory, ideally UKAS-accredited.
5. What's the real price per day?
Compare the cost per daily serving, not per pot, and check the amount of extract per capsule so you're comparing like with like.

A note on comparison claims
Under the CAP Code, comparisons must objectively compare material, relevant, verifiable and representative features of products. That's why this guide gives you criteria rather than a league table. Any brand calling itself "most effective" should be able to show you the evidence, and none can show head-to-head human trials.
FAQ
Which lion's mane brand is the most effective?
No brand can show it's the most effective, because there are no head-to-head trials. Compare on what you can verify: fruiting body rather than grain-grown mycelium, a clearly described extract with an amount per capsule, a beta-glucan figure with its test method, heavy metal results from a named lab, and the price per daily serving.
Is fruiting body lion's mane better than mycelium?
Fruiting body products are made from the mushroom itself, while mycelium grown on grain can leave a product that's largely grain, as a 2026 paper in the Journal of AOAC International explains. The two parts contain different compounds, hericenones mainly in the fruiting body and erinacines in the mycelium, and human trials have used different preparations. Check what's actually in the capsule rather than relying on the label term alone.
Can lion's mane supplements claim to improve memory in the UK?
No. Only health claims authorised on the Great Britain register can be used, and lion's mane doesn't have one. A 2025 systematic review found the human evidence is still limited. Be wary of products promising sharper memory or focus in their own words.
How much lion's mane did studies use?
Doses ranged from 1.8 g a day in healthy young adults to about 3 g a day of dried fruiting body in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Many products are concentrated extracts rather than whole mushroom powder, so ask the brand what each capsule is equivalent to before comparing.
The best lion's mane supplement in the UK is the one that answers all five checklist points openly at a fair price per day. Use the checklist, and expect every brand, including us, to answer it.
